Green Papayas is the story of a child’s time with their aging grandmother who is declining both cognitively and physically. It is through the mother’s recollections of the past that her children learn of the hardship and courage that defined their grandmother and which gave them dreams.
I wrote this story because, as a physician, I care for many elders who live in longterm care facilities. I am moved by the loneliness of their lives as they lose their identity with the passage of time. We often forget that these elders are not just patients with dementia, but actual people with stories filled with amazing courage, love, and hope.
